Renovation of the SOS Children’s Village in Cape Town
and provision of equipment for the children in the village
Children deprived of parental care are among the most vulnerable groups in South Africa. Many have experienced poverty, violence, neglect or family separation before being taken into care by SOS programmes.
The SOS Children’s Village in Cape Town, which opened in 1996, is currently home to 86 children across 15 family homes. After nearly thirty years of continuous use, the water and sanitation systems are showing significant signs of deterioration: dilapidated pipes, leaks, drainage problems and repeated blockages are compromising the living conditions of the children and their carers.
Yet access to clean water, safe sanitation facilities and a healthy living environment is essential for the health, protection and development of children.

Our contribution
In partnership with SOS Children’s Villages South Africa, SOS Children’s Villages International is supporting a project to refurbish essential infrastructure at the SOS Children’s Village in Cape Town.
The project will modernise the outdated water and sanitation systems to ensure reliable access to water, improved hygiene conditions and a safer environment for the children and their carers. The scope of the works will be determined on the basis of technical assessments carried out on site to address the most urgent needs.

In addition to physical improvements, the project also aims to enhance children’s wellbeing by providing recreational and psychosocial resources that promote their fulfilment, resilience and personal development. This holistic approach helps to create a protective environment in which children can grow, rebuild their lives and prepare for their future.
Planned activities
The project involves:
- the rehabilitation of the water and sanitation infrastructure at the SOS Children’s Village;
- improvements to the water supply and drainage networks and sanitary facilities;
- the provision of facilities and activities that promote the children’s psychosocial well-being;
- the creation of a protective, healthy environment tailored to their needs.
Expected results
Thanks to the project, the 86 children living at the SOS Children’s Village in Cape Town will benefit from:
- a sustainable living environment, enabling more resources to be devoted to their care and development.
