Enabling single-parent families in S\u00e3o Pedro
to provide quality care for their children<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

EDUCATION<\/a> \u00a0 | \u00a0 CAPE VERDE<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cape Verde has a very young <\/strong>population: 37.7% of its inhabitants are children aged 0 to 14, and 60% of the population is under 30. In this country where the average age is 24<\/strong>, the family structure is characterised by the absence of the father (this is the case for 55.9% of children – INE data for 2021) and 53% of households are headed by single women living in poor conditions. Single mothers are particularly vulnerable<\/strong>: they depend on low and unreliable incomes, often earned without a real employment contract, through short-term and precarious seasonal jobs such as street vending, fish selling or domestic help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To address the current unemployment situation, our project will focus on strengthening the beneficiaries’ capacities through practical training. Sixty beneficiaries<\/strong> from the communities of S\u00e3o Pedro are targeted: they will be trained and prepared for the job market. Through this project, we aim to enable the children of families participating in the project to grow up in a caring and protective family environment<\/strong>. The aim is to enable vulnerable families to provide quality care for their children. On the one hand, this involves strengthening their parenting skills so that they can adopt positive parenting methods<\/strong> (through training in parenting skills that promote quality care, awareness-raising activities on everyday issues and on children’s rights and protection, alcohol and drug abuse, etc.). . On the other hand, it is necessary to strengthen their economic skills so that they can earn enough income to meet their children’s basic needs (through vocational training in the fields of beauty therapy, hospitality and fish processing). While families participate in the project, children will have access to preschool and recreational services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
