Restoring access to quality education
for children affected by the earthquake<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

EDUCATIO<\/a>N<\/a>   |   MAROC<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 8 September 2023<\/strong>, a violent earthquake struck the Marrakech-Safi and Souss-Massa regions of Morocco, particularly affecting 300,000 people <\/strong>in the provinces of Taroudant and El Haouz. According to UNICEF, 100,000 of them are children. The Moroccan Ministry of Education reports that 530 schools and 55 boarding schools have been damaged<\/strong>, mainly in the provinces of Chichaoua and Taroudant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given the urgency of the situation, SOS Children\u2019s Villages in Morocco has proposed a four-pronged humanitarian response plan: protection, mental health, emergency education and finally, renovation, construction and relocation. The latter includes the construction of a secondary school, a boarding school for girls and changing rooms on the site of the SOS children village of A\u00eft Ourir in the Marrakech region-Safi, the renovation of the village infrastructure and the temporary relocation of parents who have lost their home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOS Villages d’Enfants Monde<\/strong> is committed to contributing to the construction and equipment of a secondary school and boarding school for children affected by the earthquake. These buildings will address the need for quality education for girls and boys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Construction of the secondary school<\/strong>
This project involves the construction of new buildings with classrooms, a laboratory, a library, rooms dedicated to science, as well as administrative areas and an infirmary. The school will eventually be able to accommodate 500 pupils, both boys and girls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Construction of the boarding school<\/strong>
This boarding school for 50 girls will include two reading rooms, a kitchen and refectory, a laundry room, a prayer room, offices, bedrooms and sanitary facilities. This comfortable and secure living space will be a means of combating the problem of girls dropping out of school, which has been exacerbated by the disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
