The rights of the child and the adolescent at the heart of the programmes in Benin!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Parakou, Benin’s third largest city and the economic capital of the north, occupies a strategic position in terms of trade and logistics. As a crossroads between the south and the north, it attracts a varied and constantly growing population. However, this urban dynamic is accompanied by major challenges in terms of child protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In several neighbourhoods, particularly on the outskirts, child labour is common. Many are involved in economic activities from an early age: market work, workshops, street vending, portering, farming or domestic chores. Although sometimes seen as an apprenticeship, these activities often undermine their right to education, health and balanced development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This phenomenon is linked to various factors: poverty, illiteracy, adult unemployment, but also internal migration, with children coming from rural areas to be \u2018placed\u2019 or to seek better living conditions. Some find themselves in situations of forced labour, exploitation or dropping out of school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The persistence of traditional practices, lack of resources and demographic pressure make it difficult to combat this scourge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To remedy this, it is essential to strengthen the coordination of players on the ground, invest in education that is accessible to all and support families with viable economic alternatives. The involvement of the communities and the children themselves is crucial in guaranteeing every child in Parakou a future that is dignified, safe and respectful of their rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

COMMUNITY STRUCTURES INVOLVED<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Community structures made up of children, adolescents and adults promote collective awareness of child protection and well-being and mobilise resources to support vulnerable children and their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They regularly organise awareness-raising activities for adults and children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
